Deputy President William Ruto has admitted that he is willing to resign from the government if the decision will not be used against him, or for the benefit of his enemies.
After months of civil war within the jubilee party, the DP has refused to resign and instead used his office to promote his bottom up economic policy. This has brought him to loggerheads with the president and president’s allies, asking the DP to resign. Some have given the example of Jaramogi Odinga who resigned when he was sidelined in the government.
Raila Odinga Factor
It has now emerged that Ruto is ready and willing to do the honorable thing and resign, but on conditions. Part of it is that Raila Odinga will not be appointed the DP.
“I can resign even today, but what assurance do I have that Raila Odinga will not be appointed the Deputy President? He will then go ahead to use the office to campaign against me. I am not that naïve.”
Ruto added that if he resigns, some people might take advantage and go after his wealth. This is because he will have no power to protect him. He cited numerous people who have gone to jail after losing power. Definitely, he would not want to be one of them.
“I might end up losing Weston Hotel, or some other prime property. They could go after my Sugoi farm or one of my helicopters. This would be the ultimate crime against a hustler, and I will not give them an opportunity for that. I will continue being in office so that I can torment them every day. Come August 2022, I will be sworn in as president.”
The statement by the Deputy President now leaves the Jubilee Party to decide his fate, which is not a very appealing position. Should the vote to impeach him, he will become more popular. If they don’t, he will continue to use them against them. The only option is to assure him that Odinga will not be appointed DP, and let him keep his loot.
